School Programs

The Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service has always maintained a presence in our schools.  In 2001 the Community Services Officer's position became a full-time position.  Since that time, a full slate of programs became available for students of all ages.  These programs follow School Board curriculum.

  1.  Junior / Senior Kindergarden - Introduction to the Police Officer & Personal Safety & Injury Prevention.
  2. Grade One - Personal Safety & Injury Prevention.
  3. Grade Two - Personal Safety & Injury Prevention & Stranger Safety.
  4. Grade Three - Personal Safety & Injury Prevention & Stranger Safety.
  5. Grade Four - Personal Safety & Injury Prevention & Stranger Safety.
  6. Grade Five - Personal Safety & Injury Prevention.
  7. Grade Six - VIP & Personal Safety & Injury Prevention.
  8. Grade Seven - Personal Safety & Injury Prevention.
  9. Grade Eight - Personal Safety & Injury Prevention.
  10. Other Topics - Operation Lifesaver, School Bus Safety, Risk Watch, Internet Safety & others.
  11. Grades 9-12 - A variety of programming is available to Secondary School students and could include: speaking to law classes on the use of a roadside screening device, breathalizer, Liquor laws, Highway Traffic Act, use of fatal vision simulation goggles, Drug Safety etc.

Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service Community Services Division Programs

Provincially Mandated Programs:

  5. Ontario Chiefs of Police Programming - The Ontario Chiefs of Police send out new programs from time to time.
Locally Initiated Programs:
  • Annual International Emergency Response Day
  • Cops for Tots
  • Police Education for Schools
  • "Caught You Doing Something Right"  - A program designed to rewward parents who properly restrain children in safety seats.
  • Child Seat Inspections
  • "Operation Cuddles" - A program to provide children of trauma with a Teddy Bear.  These bears could be used in the event of a serious collision, family disbutes or any other trauma.
  • Crime Stoppers - This service co-operates with local media in highlighting local crimes through the media.  Community Services has also partnered with the local high schools in providing a "Tip of the Week" for students.
  • Robbery & Shoplifting Seminars - This service has been offered to local businesses in the area.
  • Home Security - A service offerred to the general public on an on-going basis.
  • Counterfeiting - Seminars have been provided through the local Chamber of Commerce, and a Counterfeit Watch / Bulletin goes out via Fax / E-mail to local banks and businesses on an ongoing basis.
  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design - The Community Services Officer has been trained in this concept and has assisted / consulted with local businesses and the Municipality on many projects.
  • Babysitters Course - Community Services assists the local YMCA and area schools with the teaching of this course.
  • Law Lectures - Lectures are presented to the local high schools and the general public.
  • Drug Awareness - Community Services and drug officers present lectures to schools and the general public.
  • Annual Christmas Parade - Community Services and the Police Service take an active role in the Annual Parade.
  • Home & Business Security Surveys - The Community Services Officer follows up break & enters with businesses and home owners applying the principles of CPTED to precent future incidents.
  • Combat Auto Theft - An educational program designed to reduce the incidence of auto theft in partnership with CAA.
  • Ladies Car Care Clinics - The Service partners with the Fire Department and local car dealers to provide information on travel safety, various parts of the car and how to use a fire extinguisher.
  • Video Library - Video Productions - Community Services maintains a stock of video tapes that are available to the public.  In the past a number of videos have been produced in partership of a local video company.
  • "Operation Pumpkin" - Our Service and Rogers Cable have partnered to protect children at Halloween.
  • Child Fingerprinting Clinics - Our Service has partnered with local schools, Ontario Early Years and other groups in the community to provide affordable fingerprinting services for the public.
  • Bicycle Rodeos - Our Service has partnered with Sydenham Community Credit Union & local Service Clubs to provide bicycle rodeos / education for students in our area.
  • School Bus Safety - Safe bus riding information for students and teachers.
  • "Operation Life Saver" - A program designed by CN Police to introduce railroad safety to adults and young people.
  • Committees & Liasion Duties - The Community Services Officer sits on many boards & committees in the Strathroy-Caradoc / London area.
  • Risk Watch - This Service & the Fire Department have partnered to assist schools with this program which involves all aspects of student / child safety.
  • Bullying - Community Services has a power point presentation available on bullying based on the teaching of Ms. Barbara Coloroso, a well known author on the topic of bullying.
  • Internet Safety for Kids - This power point presentation was produced as the result of a request from a local school.
  • Celebration of Emergency Services - Our Service has partnered with the local Ministerial Association to have a local church service for members, family of members and the general public in October of each year.  Local Police, Fire & Ambulance personnel are envited to attend.
  • Community Service Co-Operative - Our Service in conjunction with Community Services Officers in a four County area have partnered to work on joint programs and to exchange programs in use in respective jurisdictions.
  • Joint Community Service - Traffic Project - When time allows, Community Services & Traffic have combined the use of the speed sign and lazer device to educate the public through enforcement on speed laws and other statues (Summer months).
  • Teaching Co-Operative - The Community Services Officer has become more involved with the Thames Valley Distric School Board in sharing teaching skills in the area of Values - Influences & Peers program and other joint programming.
Senior Programming:
  • Seniors Taking Extra Precautions (S.T.E.P.) - This is a program for seniors covering a variety of topics.  The program has been updated to a powerpoint presentation and information package for seniors.
  • "Project Phonebusters" - This program is information on Frauds / Scams.
  • Senior Winter Driving Seminar - A powerpoint presention now exists for seniors on winter driving.
  • Common Highway Signs - A powerpoint presentation now exists on common highway signs.  This as a result of a request for information on current signs from a senior.

Community Services Officer Initiative

Constable McIlmoyle purchased and restored a 1967 Plymouth Flury 1 - Police Pursuit.  The vechile is equipped as it was in 1967, and is used at rea Cruise Nights in order to promote the Police Service.  The car has been to displays in both Canada and the United States.

 
Community Services continues to forge partnerships with area businesses and groups of interest to promote safety and the good will of the Police Service, hence our motto "Community Committment".
