The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc’s water distribution system provides water to homes and businesses. In general, the property line is the dividing line. The municipality is responsible from the property line to the water main. The Property Owner is responsible from the property line to the home or business. There are exceptions: the water meter and remote radio reader are the responsibility of the municipality, and the connection on the curb stop valve that connects to the water service line is the responsibility of the Property Owner.

Service (Curb) BoxProtects the curb stop valve and should be secured and flush with the ground. Do not touch or cover it. Curb Stop Valve (excluding the connection on curb stop valve – property owner side)This valve is located underground, the valve controls the flow of water from the municipal water main to your property. Remote Radio Reading DeviceA small box mounted on/beside the meter or closer to the exterior, that allows municipal staff to obtain water meter reads if necessary. Water MainsA series of underground pipes throughout the municipality that carry water to water service lines. Service ConnectionThe part of the pipe that runs from the water main to the curb stop valve in front of your property. Water MeterRecords the volume of water used by your property. |

How Water Enters your Home – Shut-off Valves |
The Municipality supplies water to your home or business. There should be a gate valve or a ball valve (shut-off valve) before the water meter. Ensure you know the location of the shut-off valve, and keep the area around it open and accessible. This valve allows you to shut off water supply in your home/ or business if necessary. |
Leak Detection |
It is important for property owners to have an understanding of what is going on within your home or business, and we encourage owner to take the time to review your property for water leaks. Common types of leaks that may occur in your home or business include; valves that do not seal properly or have become worn down, water softeners, worn toilet flappers and dripping faucets. Leaks can cause an increase in your water bill. Please refer to the below checklist to assist in looking for leaks: Detecting Water Leaks Checklist (PDF [702 kB]) If you detect a leak, it is important to take the necessary steps to fix the issue as soon as possible. The internal plumbing of a home or business include the pipes, drains, valves and fixtures and is the responsibility of the Property Owner to maintain. |
Protecting Pipes & Plumbing |
ToiletsDo not flush any hygiene products (wipes, paper towel, cotton swabs, dental floss, diapers or rags), medications, household hazardous waste (paint, cleaning products), or car/garage products (motor oil, antifreeze) down your toilet. These items can cause a sewer backup, damage to municipal wastewater facilities, and pollution. Drains - Fats, Oils and GreaseDo not pour any fats, oils or grease down the drain. Fats, oils and grease are by-products of food preparation that may include: butter/shortening/margarine, meat trimmings, milk or cream, cheeses, cooking oils, salad dressing, gravy, mayonnaise, or meat grease. When poured down a drain as a liquid, the fats, oils, and grease will cool and harden, causing build ups in pipes. Over time, the build ups cause the restriction of sewage flow – both on your property and municipal property. What Can You Do?
