Water Tap

The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc is launching a program to upgrade and replace water meters in every home and business as part of a mandatory program to modernize our technology, improve operations, reduce maintenance activities and enhance customer service to the public.

ICONIX Waterworks has been contracted by the Municipality to install the new meters for all residential and commercial properties. Beginning this summer, ICONIX Waterworks will start to contact all properties serviced by Municipal water in Strathroy-Caradoc to schedule an appointment to upgrade or replace water meters.

The new meters will be installed on an area-by-area basis beginning in Summer 2020. All water meters are expected to be upgraded by Spring 2021.

Check out our "Virtual Open House" to learn more about the project, how to prepare for water metre replacement, and special COVID-19 protocols.

Please note that installations will be occurring on an area-by-area basis within the Municipality. Residents will receive notification via mail containing information on how to book an appointment by phone or online. Residents are asked not to contact the provider until a notice is received.

COVID-19 Update: Working Together. Working Safely.

ICONIX remains committed to the protection of the health and safety of employees, contractors, and members of the community. ICONIX will ensure that the COVID-19 safety protocols below are followed by all employees during the water meter upgrade process:

  • Pre-screening of owners upon booking the appointment, and by the technician before entering the premises
  • Daily screening of technicians before commencing the day
  • Minimizing interaction between the installer and the owners
  • Maintaining safe physical distancing during the installation
  • Wearing of personal protective equipment, including a mask, disposable gloves, and eye protection
  • Proper use of disinfectants and hand sanitizer before, during, and after installations

If you have an appointment and are feeling ill, or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, it is recommended that you contact ICONIX to reschedule your appointment.

Please note that installations continue to occur on an area-by-area basis within the Municipality. Residents will receive a notification via mail containing information on how to book an appointment by phone or online. Residents are asked not to contact ICONIX until a notice is received.

Why do water meters need to be upgraded or replaced?

The typical life of a water meter is 10 to 20 years.  Like most mechanical devices, they eventually need to be replaced. The Municipality currently has approximately 7,200 meters, a portion of which are past their useful life. The Municipality is upgrading and replacing meters as part of a comprehensive program.

The new meters utilize an automated meter reading (AMR) system that offers many operational efficiencies related to the process of reading water meters, minimizing estimated bills, and reducing maintenance, while eliminating the need for a technician to access your property to manually read the meter. The upgraded technology offers many benefits, including enhanced customer service. Access to timely, reliable, and more accurate data will assist the municipality in serving the public in an efficient manner.

Who will pay for my new meter?

The Municipality is responsible for the cost of the new meters and installation.

Who is installing the new water meters?

The Municipality has hired ICONIX Waterworks to install the new meters. ICONIX installers:

  • Will drive vehicles with the ICONIX name and logo
  • Will not ask for any form of payment from customers
  • Will be in uniform and carry an ID badge:

Can I opt out of the installation?

Under the Municipal water by-law, it is mandatory to participate in this program as your property or business is connected to the Municipal water service.

When will installations take place?

The new water meters will be installed beginning August 2020. Meter exchanges will take place:

  • Monday to Friday - 8:00am to 8:00pm
  • Saturday - 9:00am to 5:00pm

In the interest of maximizing customer service, the Municipality will permit work to take place on Sundays.

How do I schedule my installation?
Residents will receive a notification in the mail containing information on how to book an appointment by phone or online. Technicians are completing work one area at a time, and residents are asked not to contact the provider until a notice is received.
How will I know when technicians move into my area and I need to book my appointment?

As technicians move into an area, residents will receive notification in the mail from the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc and ICONIX prompting them to book an appointment either online or by telephone. As technicians are doing one area at a time, residents are asked not to contact the provider until a notice is received.

As the project progresses, updates will be posted to this webpage, Facebook, and Twitter.

Can I install the new meter myself?
No. ICONIX Waterworks has a contract to install the water meters and the reading equipment devices. Every installer is professionally trained to install water meters.
Do I need to be present for the water meter installation?
Yes, in order to complete your meter installation ICONIX staff will require access to your main shut-off valve. An adult (18+ years old) must be home during the installation to provide access and confirm completion.
How long will the installation take?

The upgrade and replacement procedure will require approximately 60 minutes to complete depending on the condition and the complexity of the plumbing. During this time, water may be unavailable.

We encourage you to book a time that is most convenient for you through the online portal, or by calling the telephone hotline, once your introductory letter has been received.

How will I know when the installation has been completed?
ICONIX installers will speak with you upon completion. Once your meter installation has been completed, please take a minute to let ICONIX know how they did at www.surveymonkey.com/r/iww-strathroy-caradoc.
Will wireless technology affect my health?

The new water meters will not negatively affect your health. The wireless portions of the system will be operated according to Federal Communications Commission standards, and will not interfere with other radio frequencies in the area. Exposure to radio waves from these meters is very minimal; exposure is comparable to a mobile phone or baby monitor, and less than a wi-fi network or microwave.

Commitment to your safety

ICONIX Waterworks is committed to your safety.  The following safety protocols will be followed during the water meter upgrade process:

  • Pre-screening of owners upon booking appointment and by the technician before entering the premises
  • Daily screening of technicians before commencing the day
  • Minimizing the interaction between the installer and owner
  • Maintaining social distancing during the installation
  • Wearing of personal protective equipment, including wearing a mask, disposable gloves and eye protection
  • Use of disinfectants and hand sanitizers before, during and after installations
How should I prepare for my water meter installation?

To complete the required work, a technician will require inside access to your premise and water meter and related equipment.

In order to complete your meter installation, ICONIX technicians will require access to your existing water meter and main shut-off valve, which is typically located where the water service comes into your house.
