The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc is excited to announce that construction of a new fire station is set to begin in Strathroy in mid-February.
As part of the Municipality’s 2021 Fire Master Plan (FMP), Strathroy’s pre-existing fire station - Station 1 - was identified for replacement due to its age and condition. The FMP also identified that the location of the current station (23 Zimmerman St., Strathroy) serves as an ideal site for the construction of the new station. This site has been chosen as its central location will allow the Fire Service to effectively serve Strathroy and the surrounding area. The existing Station 1 will remain open during the construction of the new station to ensure that there are no impediments to the services provided by the Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department.
To address the needs of the Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Service, a+Link Architects were engaged by the Municipality to design the new station and site layout. The new Station 1 has been designed to meet or exceed all health and safety requirements outlined in provincial regulations. As part of the proposed design, the new station will offer the Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department with drive through access from East Centre St. through to Metcalfe St. In order to facilitate this access, it was required that Zimmerman St. be permanently closed. A report was presented to Strathroy-Caradoc Council on September 6, 2022, which recommended that Zimmerman St. be closed to accommodate the new station. This report was received by Council for information and outlined that the Municipality delivered notice to local residents and conducted a survey of the required lands. In response to this report, Council approved the recommendation to close Zimmerman St. This closure will take effect in mid-February, 2024.
The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc is eager to begin this project and invites the public to stay up-to-date on the progress by visiting www.strathroy-caradoc.ca/firestationone.
