Strathroy-Caradoc will observe Fire Prevention Week from October 6-12 with a focus on kitchen safety.
To kick off Fire Prevention Week, the Strathroy, Mt. Brydges and Melbourne fire stations will host an Open House on Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors will have a chance to meet their local firefighters, take a tour of the fire halls, and enjoy some cake. There will be various displays filled with interactive activities for everyone. Residents will also be able to get a look at the new fire trucks at the Strathroy and Melbourne stations.
Cooking related fires are the number one cause of home fires in Canada, resulting in many deaths and hundreds of injuries each year. Two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen--more than any other place in the home. Often when firefighters are called to a fire that started in the kitchen, residents tell them that they only left the kitchen for a few minutes. Sadly, that’s all it takes for a dangerous fire to start.
The Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department hopes Fire Prevention week activities centered around the theme “Prevent Kitchen Fires” will help alert local residents to potential dangers in the kitchen before they suffer a major tragedy.
