Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Joanne Vanderheyden was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal at a ceremony at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto this past Thursday, January 17.
Mayor Vanderheyden was nominated for the medal in recognition for her years of service in political office. As the first female mayor of the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc and the first female warden for Middlesex County, Vanderheyden was also recognized for her efforts in breaking down barriers for women in her field.
Ottawa Deputy Mayor Steve Desroches presented the medal to Mayor Vanderheyden on behalf of the Governor General of Canada.
Nominations for the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal were accepted throughout 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. Organized by the Government of Canada, the medals honour Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities or in their respective fields. Recipients were nominated by partner organizations and the general public.
The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc recognizes Mayor Vanderheyden’s ongoing dedication to public service and congratulates her on this honour.
