A new policy on the planting and managing of trees on public property has been approved by Strathroy-Caradoc Council.
Council on April 15 approved a proposal, which establishes a policy and programs regarding the planting, maintenance, removal, and preservation of trees located on public lands in the municipality. In the process, the initiative creates fair and consistent practices across Strathroy-Caradoc, and makes best use of staff resources and possible funding opportunities.
Under the plan, an annual program identifying the planting of new trees, removal of unhealthy trees, and the trimming and relocation of trees is established. The planting of trees on boulevards in new subdivisions becomes a standard part of any development package. The policy also includes measures for re-forestation in existing residential areas and measures to replace existing unhealthy trees. Communication and interaction with property owners when trees near their properties have to be removed and replaced is also part of the plan. The policy also covers trees along rural roads in the municipality.
The plan includes a comprehensive list of tree species that are allowed for new planting, along with guidelines that specify where on public boulevards trees can be planted and what size would be most appropriate for a given location.
