Council at its meeting of 17 September 2012 made the difficult decision not to proceed with the Indoor Pool Facility project at this time due to current financial constraints and the significant impact this project would have on the ability to meet the future service needs of the Municipality.
As an alternative, the Municipality intends to utilize the provincial grant contribution of $4 million received in 2011 for the pool project to pursue the development of a new outdoor pool attraction.
Although the Municipality certainly recognizes the potential value of an indoor pool facility for the community, Council unanimously voted in favour of this new direction as a decision based on effective leadership and fiscal responsibility. By working within the financial resources that are available for the pool project, the Municipality will have the opportunity to rebuild its financial resources after a period of significant capital investment in community infrastructure that has resulted in many improvements for residents.
In the coming months, the Municipality will focus on developing a plan to enhance aquatic recreational opportunities for the Municipality in anticipation of the deadline for the provincial grant contribution of March 31, 2014.
