As of April 1, 2013, the cost of using the two transfer stations in Strathroy-Caradoc will be going up.
Council on Jan. 7 approved rate increases for residents using the Strathroy and Mt. Brydges stations to dispose of various types of items not normally collected as either garbage or recyclables.
The current and new rates for both sites are:
- car/minimum fee $10 now; minimum fee $10 and car fee $20 as of April 1;
- pick-up truck fee/trailer $30 now; increasing to $45 as of April 1;
- large vehicles $50 now; increasing to $65 as of April 1.
The changes are expected by municipal staff to increase annual revenue at the two sites, helping to minimize the tax impact on residents. In 2011, operating costs reached $307,000. This year, local officials are tentatively budgeting $255,000 to run the stations based on operational changes at both locations, though the final budget has not yet been set. The difference between the operating costs at the two locations and the revenue from the fees to use the facilities is made up through general taxation.
The increase in fees as of April 1 will mark the first change since the Strathroy station opened in 2009, and will bring them up to the same level as similar transfer stations in the city of London.
