A total of 44 native trees and 200 shrubs were planted along the Sydenham River in Alexandra Park on Wednesday, September 25 in an effort to create naturalized areas within the park system.
The community planting project was originally scheduled for an earlier date, but the event was postponed due to intense flooding in the park and eventually rescheduled to coincide with National Tree Day.
Employees of the Municipality and the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority staff were joined by community volunteers and members of the Strathroy-Caradoc Lions Club in planting native trees and shrubs along the Sydenham River and the smaller watercourses in the park.
The planting day was part of a larger initiative with the Middlesex Stewardship Council to enhance the Sydenham River headwaters. The Sydenham is one of the most species-diverse watercourses of its size in Canada. The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority and Middlesex Stewardship Council are committed to ensuring wildlife habitat and water quality is enhanced in this watershed.
A second planting day with local elementary school students is scheduled for Monday, October 21. These community planting initiatives are sponsored by the RBC Blue Water Project, Wildlife Habitat Canada, St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation, and the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc.
