Strathroy-Caradoc residents are doing a good job in limiting the amount of waste they produce that goes into landfills.
Local council learned recently that the waste diversion rate across the municipality is either almost at the target set by the province of Ontario or well above it. While the province’s target for the percentage of waste that is either reused or recycled is 60%, the waste diversion rate in Strathroy is currently 56%, while in Caradoc, it is 74%. A combined rate across the entire municipality would be well above the 60% target, according to local officials.
Typically, waste diversion rates are higher in rural areas than in urban centres. The highest diversion rate in the area belongs to Adelaide-Metcalfe, at 84%. Southwest Middlesex and North Middlesex are both at 77%. The city of London, meanwhile, has a rate of 42%, while Sarnia is at 35%.
Local officials note that the impending move to the wheelie bin system of collecting garbage and recyclables should help increase Strathroy-Caradoc’s waste diversion rates. They point to the experiences of other communities that have moved to this system and found that their rates have gone up. The new system is scheduled to start in Strathroy-Caradoc the week of January 7,2013.
