Public Meeting Regarding 7013 Walkers Drive
With the gallery full, Council heard from concerned residents and Strathroy Hospice representatives about the impacts of developing a Hospice on prime agricultural land.
The proposed development at 7013 Walkers Drive would involve an official plan amendment and rezoning of approximately 3.5 hectares of prime agricultural land to allow for the future Strathroy Hospice. At the public meeting, residents raised concerns related to roadway traffic, light and sound pollution, and potential impacts on nearby wildlife rehabilitation efforts at Salthaven.
The site’s designation as prime agricultural land presents significant policy and planning challenges, and multiple scenarios are being considered. All feedback from the meetings will be documented, with Planning staff reviewing input from residents, the applicant(s), municipal staff, and consultants before the matter returns to Council for further consideration.
Council Business
During the Meeting, Council also:
- Discussed the Downtown Revitalization of Mount Brydges and Strathroy. The downtown revitalization projects are planned future initiatives expected to be one of the Municipality’s most impactful projects, with significant short- and long-term effects on local communities and businesses. Once completed, it will deliver highly visible improvements that help shape the character and vitality of both downtowns for many years to come.
A motion was passed by Council to direct staff to prepare a report outlining how we could do a community engagement process using internal staff. This report is to be brought back to Council within 30 days. - Council discussed the proposed Rural Tree Maintenance Program: Staff retained a certified arborist to complete a high-level assessment of trees located within the municipal right-of-way on rural roads. The resulting report summarizes the current tree inventory, associated risk levels, and estimated costs for tree removal over a ten-year period. A motion was passed to proceed with Option 2 as presented - Removal of High-Risk Trees Over 3-Year Period which is estimated Annual Cost: $65,000 (excl. HST).
