Coyotes In Strathroy-Caradoc
The Municipality has recently received an increased number of inquiries regarding coyote sightings in Strathroy-Caradoc. Coyotes are a common wildlife species found throughout Ontario and can be present in both rural and urban areas.
If you encounter a coyote, keep your distance and stay calm. In all probability it won’t be interested in you. In the unlikely event that it approaches:
- If you have children, pick them up.
- If you have pets, keep them on a leash. (Never leave pets unattended outdoors.)
- Yell and make yourself look bigger.
Tips to prevent and manage conflicts with coyotes in our communities:
- Don't put food out to attract wildlife (this makes the animals less fearful of humans over time)
- Keep your pets inside at night
- Clean up after your dog - coyotes are attracted to dog feces
- Install a fence on your property, ensuring it extends at least 20 centimeters underground
- Garbage should be stored in sealed containers or put out the morning of collection
