Strathroy-Caradoc Welcomes Medical Students for Discovery Week

The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc is pleased to welcome undergraduate medical students from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry as part of the annual Discovery Week program.

Discovery Week is a mandatory one-week rural placement for first-year medical students, providing hands-on exposure to healthcare delivery in rural and regional communities across Southwestern Ontario. More than 60 communities participate in the program each year.

During their placement in Strathroy-Caradoc, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Shadow physicians and healthcare professionals
  • Learn about day-to-day healthcare operations in a rural setting
  • Collaborate and network with local healthcare teams
  • Experience life and work in a rural and regional community

The program is designed to introduce future physicians to the unique opportunities and challenges of rural medicine while fostering a greater understanding of community-based healthcare.

Throughout the week, students may gain experience in areas including:

  • Rural and regional healthcare systems and medical practice
  • Inter-professional collaboration and team-based care
  • Acute and chronic disease management
  • Working with diverse patient populations

Discovery Week plays an important role in encouraging future healthcare professionals to consider practicing in small and mid-sized communities throughout Southwestern Ontario following completion of their medical training. Welcome to all participating students!
